1. The UK market for beverage cans was 8,778 million in 2009, made up of 4,315 million cans for carbonated soft drinks and 4,463 million for beer, cider and other alcoholic drinks.
2. In 2009 the market grew by 250 million cans over 2008 shipments, to show more than a decade of continuous growth.
3. The UK is the largest market for drinks cans in Europe- where the market in 2009 was 51.5 billion cans.
4. Cans account for 67% by volume of the packs sold in the UK take home beer market.
5. In the UK CSD market, they account for 25% by volume of the packs sold. There was a 3% gain in market share for cans in 2009.
6. Independent research undertaken for the Can Makers shows that the CO2 emitted in the transport of carbonated soft drinks, is 49% less for 33cl cans than for 50cl PET bottles (per litre) and for beer, the reduction for 44cl cans compared with 33cl glass bottles is 44% (per litre).
7. Total retail market value for UK beverages in cans in 2008 was £18.7 million, made up of carbonated soft drinks £5.7 billion and alcoholic drinks £13 billion.
